Australia defends under-16 social media ban amid tech pushback

Australia’s Communications Minister Anika Wells has told the BBC she is not intimidated by tech companies opposing the country’s “world-leading” social media ban and is prepared if Washington intervenes.

From December 10, platforms including Snapchat, Meta, TikTok, and YouTube must take “reasonable steps” to prevent children under 16 from having accounts. Wells said the policy prioritises parents over platforms and is backed by research showing potential harm to young users.

She noted that many countries have sought advice on the ban, which she described as a model for protecting children online. While US officials, including President Trump, have indicated they may scrutinise the policy, Wells said Australia will not be distracted and will continue to enforce the ban.
