Healthcare delivery in the Bono East Region has received a significant boost with the official presentation of its first dialysis machines to the Holy Family Hospital in Techiman. The equipment marks a historic milestone, bringing specialized kidney care to the region for the first time.
The two modern dialysis units were handed over by Obuobia Darko-Opoku, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF), in partnership with HealthTech Ghana Limited. The initiative aims to bridge the gap in specialized medical services and provide critical, life-saving treatment to patients suffering from renal conditions.
Prior to this intervention, residents of the Bono East Region requiring dialysis were forced to travel long distances to other regions, incurring substantial financial costs and often facing dangerous delays in accessing urgent care. The installation of the machines at Holy Family Hospital is expected to drastically reduce this burden, allowing patients to receive treatment closer to their communities.
“We are delighted to commission these machines, which represent a new chapter for healthcare in this region,” said Obuobia Darko-Opoku during the ceremony. “This is about ensuring that no one has to choose between life-saving treatment and financial ruin due to travel costs. We are committed to expanding access to critical care for all Ghanaians.”
The event was attended by Francis Owusu Antwi, representing the Bono East Regional Minister. In a speech delivered on his behalf, Prince Opoku Mensah, the Regional Political Coordinator, commended the GMTF and its partners for their foresight. He described the donation as a “major boost” that aligns with the government’s agenda to decentralize specialized healthcare services.
Health officials at the hospital noted that the new equipment will not only provide immediate relief for kidney patients but will also enhance the facility’s overall capacity to manage chronic kidney diseases. This is expected to lead to better health outcomes for patients across the Bono East Region and surrounding areas.
The installation of the dialysis units is part of a broader effort by the Ghana Medical Trust Fund to equip underserved regions with essential medical technology, reinforcing the national commitment to universal health coverage and improved access to quality healthcare.
