The Deputy National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Ako Gunn, has issued a frank admission that the current administration has failed to adequately communicate its efforts regarding corruption prosecutions and asset recovery to the Ghanaian public.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey on Starr FM, Ako Gunn acknowledged a significant gap between the government’s actions and public awareness. While confirming that multiple cases inherited from the previous administration are active before the courts, he conceded that limited public engagement has left many citizens in the dark.
“I think it’s important for us to take the people along. These recoveries that we’ve been able to do on landed properties and all those things, we’ve not really communicated to our people,” Mr. Ako Gunn stated.
He noted a disconnect between public expectation and government communication, explaining that citizens are eager to see tangible results in the fight against corruption. “What our people want to see is prosecution, arrest, prosecution, and jailing people,” he added, emphasizing the demand for visible accountability.
To illustrate that legal processes are underway, Mr. Ako Gunn cited ongoing proceedings in cases involving Gifty Oware-Mensah and Kwabena Adu-Boahene, both of which are currently before the courts.
Addressing criticisms regarding the pace of justice, the Deputy Communications Officer defended the government’s strategy, stressing the importance of due process. He indicated that authorities are deliberately taking time to build strong, legally sound cases to ensure successful prosecutions.
“Once they are watertight… the wheels of justice grind slowly, but it grinds fine,” he said, reassuring the public of the administration’s commitment to accountability while adhering strictly to legal procedures.
