A stark warning has been issued to the public, particularly the youth in Kumasi, against the consumption of a local herbal concoction falsely purported to cleanse the heart. New scientific evidence from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has revealed the mixture to be a highly toxic and corrosive substance containing industrial chemicals.
Researchers from the Department of Pharmacology at KNUST conducted a study on the concoction, administering it to laboratory rats. The results were immediate and fatal, with all the test subjects dying within 24 hours of ingestion.
Alarmingly, further analysis by the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry uncovered the composition of the liquid. Scientists discovered that the concoction contains acetone—a solvent commonly found in nail polish remover—alongside another unidentified corrosive substance. In a dramatic demonstration of its potency, the mixture was poured onto a polystyrene takeaway bowl, which it promptly melted.
The authenticity of the health risk was further underscored by an operation led by National Security. When the vendors of this dangerous product were confronted and asked to consume it themselves as proof of its safety, they outright refused, even under direct orders.
This incident has raised profound ethical questions. The deliberate peddling of a life-threatening substance for profit has been met with widespread public outrage. One observer noted the stark contradiction: the sellers are unwilling to drink something they are convincing others is a health remedy.
Health authorities are now urgently appealing to the public to exercise extreme caution. Medical experts emphasize that once vital human organs such as the heart, liver, and kidneys are damaged by toxic substances, the damage is often irreversible and difficult to treat.
“Let us be more circumspect in our choices,” a health official advised. “Do not put your life in the hands of unverified peddlers.”
Meanwhile, National Security has confirmed that the individuals arrested in connection with the sale of the deadly mixture are in custody. There are calls for the full weight of the law to be applied to ensure that justice is served and to deter others from engaging in such hazardous practices.
