VP Opoku-Agyemang pledges stronger Ghana -India ties as Indian envoy ends tour

Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has assured India of Ghana’s commitment to deepening the long-standing bilateral relationship, as she received the outgoing Indian High Commissioner for a farewell meeting.

The Vice President lauded the steady growth in relations between the two countries, citing the Indian Prime Minister’s historic visit to Ghana as a watershed moment that consolidated ties and opened new avenues for collaboration.

“We have made significant strides in our relations, particularly following the visit of the Indian Prime Minister, which has consolidated ties between our countries,” Prof. Opoku-Agyemang remarked.

She pointed to remarkable progress in bilateral trade, increased business engagements, and rising investment flows as evidence of the partnership’s robust trajectory. The Vice President underscored the importance of people-to-people exchanges, identifying education, sports, and culture as foundational pillars that continue to bind the two nations.

“Our relationship has grown steadily, underpinned by strong people-to-people connections,” she noted.

In a clear signal of Ghana’s evolving economic diplomacy, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang called for a more balanced partnership that moves beyond attracting Indian investment to actively supporting Ghanaian businesses seeking opportunities in India.

“We must further diversify and strengthen our collaboration. While we welcome increased Indian investment in Ghana, we are equally interested in supporting Ghanaian businesses to explore opportunities in India,” she emphasised.

The discussions also touched on potential cooperation in healthcare delivery, with Ghana expressing keen interest in learning from India’s advancements in affordable and accessible medical services. Educational exchanges were similarly highlighted as a priority area for enhanced collaboration.

Bidding the High Commissioner farewell, the Vice President struck a note of enduring partnership.

“Although the High Commissioner departs Ghana physically, the spirit of friendship and cooperation between our two countries endures. Our relationship has stood the test of time and will continue to grow in strength and purpose,” she assured.

The engagement reaffirms Ghana’s commitment to South-South cooperation and signals the government’s resolve to extract greater mutual benefits from one of its most consequential diplomatic relationships.
