Interior Ministry trains Police Officers on new bullion vehicle regulations

The Ministry of the Interior has conducted a specialized training programme for officers of the Ghana Police Service on the recently implemented regulations governing armoured bullion vehicles.

The session, held at the Police Headquarters in Accra with support from the Bank of Ghana, focused on the Guidelines and Standards for the Importation, Retrofitting, Usage, and Decommissioning of Armoured Bullion Vehicles.

This training follows the conclusion of a 45-day compliance period in January 2026, which allowed operators in the cash-in-transit sector to regularise their fleets. The Ministry has now moved to intensify enforcement of the rules, which were officially launched by the Interior Minister, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, on December 4, 2025.

The comprehensive guidelines set mandatory requirements for certification, operational safety, crew training, vehicle tracking, inspections, and the eventual decommissioning of armoured vehicles used for cash transportation.

Addressing the officers, the Deputy Minister for the Interior, Hon. Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, praised the Police Service for its commitment to public safety. He emphasised that the Service, as the primary enforcer, is responsible for verifying certifications, checking roadworthiness, and ensuring overall compliance.

“The Police Service must remain professional and vigilant in leading the enforcement of these standards to prevent security breaches, armed robberies, and avoidable loss of life,” Hon. Terlabi stated.

The Director-General of the Private Security Organisations Department, COP Dr. Daniel Kwame Afriyie, described the training as critical for enhancing national security and ensuring strict monitoring within the sector.

“To achieve this goal, I urge officers to check the legitimacy and certification of any armoured bullion vehicles encountered during operations and to report any illegal or non-compliant vehicles for appropriate sanction,” COP Dr. Afriyie advised.

The Ministry’s initiative aims to standardise bullion operations across the country and strengthen the security framework for the movement of high-value assets.
