Education Minister proposes national day for students to wear traditional attire

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has put forward a proposal for the institution of a national day on which all Ghanaian students would wear traditional attire to school.

The Minister made the announcement today in Accra during the closing ceremony of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology.

According to Mr. Iddrisu, the initiative is aimed at preserving and promoting Ghana’s rich cultural identity. He explained that such a day would allow learners across the country to celebrate and showcase the diversity of the nation’s heritage while fostering a stronger sense of national pride.

“Probably, we should declare a day when every Ghanaian learner must go in culturally fitting dress to observe our day nationwide so that each culture, each society, will reflect its values and culture as we observe it,” the Minister stated.

Mr. Iddrisu emphasized that while advancements in science and technology are crucial for national development, nurturing Ghanaian values through education remains equally important. He linked the proposal to broader educational goals, suggesting that integrating cultural awareness into the school experience could make national celebrations more participatory and reflective of Ghana’s diverse society.

The Minister also shared a light-hearted anecdote about past cultural exchanges, recalling a friendly debate between Ghana and Zambia over traditional smock attire, to underscore the importance of cultural dialogue.

The proposal was made in front of an audience of leaders in science, policy, and education. Mr. Iddrisu concluded that educational initiatives grounded in both scientific progress and cultural pride are essential for shaping the nation’s future.

No immediate timeline or specific date has been announced for the proposed national cultural dress day.
