Attempted arson at Accra Church thwarted by security

Security personnel at the Grace Mountain Chapel in Accra, headquarters of the Alpha Hour ministry led by Pastor Elvis Agyemang, apprehended a woman on Monday after she allegedly attempted to set the auditorium on fire.

The incident, captured on security footage, shows the suspect pouring a liquid, believed to be petrol, inside the church before attempting to ignite it. The quick intervention of the church’s security team prevented the fire from spreading, and the suspect was subsequently handed over to the police for investigation.

While official motives remain unknown and police inquiries are ongoing, the event has sparked significant discussion online. Reactions on social media have been divided, with some commentators urging caution and calling for the woman’s story to be heard. “We need to hear her side of the story,” one user wrote, reflecting a sentiment echoed by others.

Conversely, many supporters of the church condemned the act. One comment read, “People literally hate God and everything that concerns him,” viewing the attempt as an attack on faith itself. Others questioned the authenticity of the event or used it to criticize charismatic church practices.

The incident has also renewed public conversation about the importance of security infrastructure. One observer noted, “If CCTVs were installed in most places, we would realise that many of these rampant fires are the result of arson.”

Pastor Elvis Agyemang and the leadership of Alpha Hour have not yet issued an official statement. The police continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attempted arson.
