Police foil major arms smuggling operation, arrest two suspects en route to Northern Region

The Ghana Police Service has intercepted a significant cache of arms and ammunition being smuggled from Accra to Kpandai in the Northern Region, leading to the arrest of two individuals.

The operation, led by the Oti Regional Police Intelligence Directorate (PID), resulted in the interception of a Kia Rhino vehicle with registration number GS-4677-17 on Sunday, February 8, 2026, at approximately 3:30 p.m.

Acting on intelligence, PID Director ASP Maxwell Osafo-Adamu deployed a team that ambushed the vehicle. A subsequent search uncovered one locally manufactured single-barrel shotgun and 21 boxes containing 525 pieces of Lion AAA and BB ammunition. The contraband was concealed under building materials.

Two suspects, identified as Abubakari Salam Atta, the driver, and his assistant, Kabuja Kwadwo Tademe, were arrested at the scene. During interrogation, both men claimed ownership of the seized items. They are currently in custody assisting police with further investigations.

This interception follows a similar operation on January 27, where police in Accra seized bags containing guns and ammunition destined for the same location in Kpandai.

The latest seizure underscores ongoing police efforts to combat the illegal transportation of weapons across the country. Investigations are continuing to trace the source and intended recipients of the intercepted arms.
