Chamber of Mines CEO commends KoKMA over Osu Cemetery burial suspension

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Ken Ashigbey, has praised the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA) for what he described as a prompt and responsible response to concerns over activities at the Osu Cemetery.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Korle Klottey, Alfred Allotey Gaisie, recently announced a two-month suspension of all burials at the cemetery following reports of grave desecration and alleged illegal and unethical burial practices.

The temporary ban, which takes immediate effect, is aimed at allowing a thorough assessment, audit and restructuring of the cemetery’s management.

Speaking to Citi News on Thursday, February 5, 2026, Mr Ashigbey encouraged the Assembly to use the suspension period to conduct a comprehensive review of the cemetery’s layout and management systems, including the integration of modern technology to enhance planning and record-keeping.

“There is technology available to properly map cemeteries and accurately capture coordinates. Cemeteries are finite spaces, so they must be well planned to ensure that once they are full, appropriate relocation measures are taken,” he explained.

He added that the two-month moratorium announced by the MCE presents a valuable opportunity to resolve longstanding challenges associated with the cemetery.

“With this two-month moratorium, the Assembly has the chance to put all the necessary systems in place and address the issues effectively,” Mr Ashigbey said.

The decision to suspend burials follows growing public concern over alleged grave desecration and unauthorised burial activities at the historic Osu Cemetery, leading to calls for improved oversight and management.

KoKMA has assured the public that further updates will be provided after the assessment and restructuring exercise is completed.
