Mahama poised to swiftly sign anti LGBTQ bill upon Parliamentary passage, says Chief Whip

The Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has declared that President John Dramani Mahama stands ready to immediately assent to the controversial Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill once it receives parliamentary approval.

In an interview with Joy FM on Tuesday, Dafeamekpor asserted that the President’s commitment to the bill is unequivocal and that he would enact it without delay.

“He has made it clear that he is ready. His pen is ready, the ink is flowing. Once the bill is presented, he will sign it without delay,” Dafeamekpor stated.

The proposed legislation, which seeks to regulate sexual orientation, gender identity, and related advocacy, has ignited intense debate across the nation and drawn scrutiny from international observers. Proponents, including leading religious and traditional groups, argue the bill is essential to upholding Ghanaian cultural values and family structures. Opponents, however, warn it risks infringing on fundamental human rights and contravening Ghana’s international obligations.

Dafeamekpor further emphasized the determination of the Parliamentary Majority to see the bill through, claiming it reflects the will of the Ghanaian populace. He also sought to reassure supportive faith-based organizations of its impending passage.

“Even before the House resumes the process, the President has already signaled his readiness to give it his assent,” he added.

The bill remains a focal point of national discourse as it advances through the legislative process.
