Son of former Libyan leader reportedly killed in ambush

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the once-powerful son and heir apparent of late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, has reportedly been assassinated, according to statements from his political team and family members. He was 53.

Conflicting accounts have emerged regarding the circumstances of his death. A lawyer for Gaddafi told AFP that a four-man commando unit carried out an attack at his home in Zintan, a city in northwestern Libya. Meanwhile, his sister claimed in a televised interview that he was killed near Libya’s border with Algeria. No group has yet claimed responsibility.

Saif al-Islam, born in 1972, was a central figure in his father’s regime and played a key role in diplomatic efforts that led to Libya abandoning its nuclear weapons program in the 2000s. After the 2011 uprising that ousted and killed his father, he was captured and held for nearly six years by a militia in Zintan.

The International Criminal Court had sought to prosecute him for crimes against humanity for his alleged role in the violent suppression of protests in 2011. In 2015, a court in Tripoli sentenced him to death in absentia. He was later released in 2017 under an amnesty law issued by authorities in eastern Libya.

Since the fall of the Gaddafi regime, Libya has remained divided between rival governments and militias. Saif al-Islam had announced plans to run for president in 2021, but the elections were postponed indefinitely.

His death adds a new layer of uncertainty to Libya’s fractured political landscape. Authorities have not yet issued an official statement confirming the incident.
