CID boss urges public to stay alert against cybercrime and highway robberies

The Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, has appealed to the public to remain vigilant against cybercrime and other criminal activities, particularly those carried out online and on highways.

She made the call at a press briefing on Thursday, January 29, where the Police Service highlighted two major breakthroughs achieved through intelligence-led operations. COP Donkor revealed that seven suspects had been arrested in connection with a highway robbery involving a Council of State member, while five others were picked up over a separate robbery incident at Nkasem.

Using the occasion, the CID Director-General warned about the increasing threat of cyber-related crimes and urged the public to exercise caution when engaging on digital platforms.

“We urge all and sundry to remain vigilant against cyber crimes and crimes perpetrated online. Exercise due caution on digital and social media platforms. Avoid sharing personal or financial information with unknown individuals and be wary of unsolicited messages or calls requesting sensitive details,” she advised.

She also cautioned motorists, especially those involved in vehicle sales, to be extra careful, particularly when travelling at night or through isolated areas.

“Motorists, especially those involved in vehicle sales, are encouraged to stay alert at all times. Be cautious when people approach vehicle sellers with the aim of buying vehicles,” COP Donkor stated.

She further advised drivers to take basic safety precautions, including properly securing their vehicles, avoiding picking up strangers, and being cautious of distress signals that could be staged to lure victims.

The CID boss also urged the public to adopt general safety measures in their daily activities, such as staying alert in crowded places and informing trusted persons of their movements.

“Any suspicious activity should be reported immediately to the nearest police station for assistance,” she added.

Speaking on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, COP Donkor commended police officers nationwide for their professionalism and dedication to duty. She also expressed gratitude to the public for providing timely and credible information, and thanked the media for supporting police efforts through public education and awareness.

“Our partners in the media, we express our sincere appreciation to you. Your collaboration remains invaluable in the fight against crime and in promoting public safety and accountability,” she said.
