University of Buenos Aires to award Lionel Messi honorary doctorate

The University of Buenos Aires (UBA) will confer its highest honorary distinction, the Doctor Honoris Causa, on Lionel Messi, recognizing the Argentina captain as “an example of excellence, perseverance, humility and ethical conduct” and a defining ambassador of the nation’s popular culture and identity.

The university’s Superior Council, comprising the rector, the deans of its 13 faculties, and representatives of professors, graduates and students, unanimously approved the conferment of the honorary degree on Wednesday, September 30, 2026. The award will be presented on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, in a ceremony held before Argentina’s farewell match against Benin at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires.

A Recognition Beyond Statistics

In its resolution, the UBA highlighted Messi’s career as a model of sporting and personal conduct, noting that his trajectory represents “an example of excellence, perseverance, humility and ethical practice in the development of his activity, as well as a commitment to the national representation of the Argentine Republic, values that this university has historically promoted.”

The citation also emphasised the scale of his achievements with the national team. The university recognised Messi’s role in leading Argentina to four consecutive major titles—the 2021 Copa América, the 2022 Finalissima against Italy, the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, and the 2024 Copa América—a feat unprecedented in the history of the Argentine national team. It further acknowledged Argentina’s runner-up finish at the 2026 World Cup.

UBA Rector Ricardo Gelpi said the distinction was intended to honour both the athlete and the person. “Beyond what all Argentinians know about Messi, regardless of the numbers and statistics that attest to his status as an athlete, we also want to recognise a humble, persevering person, an example and ambassador of our popular culture and national identity,” Gelpi said.

Vice-Rector Emiliano Yacobitti added that the honour transcended football. “Leo Messi knew how to convey the values of the Argentine jersey and represent it with courage and respect, and thus managed to take it to the highest level of world football,” he said. “But this Honorary Doctorate is a recognition that transcends his football career. It is a tribute and a thank you that we offer him from the UBA, on behalf of all of Argentine society.”

A Career Defined by Greatness

Messi, now 39, is widely regarded as the greatest footballer of his generation and one of the greatest of all time. His honours include eight Ballon d’Or awards, four UEFA Champions League titles with FC Barcelona, and a record-breaking career at both club and international level. He announced his retirement from the national team on August 31, 2026, in a letter published on social media, after Argentina’s defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final. He departs the international stage having played 207 matches for Argentina and scored 125 goals, both all-time records for the Albiceleste.

His farewell match against Benin sold out in less than two hours, underscoring his enduring status as the most recognised living Argentine figure in the world.

A Tradition of Honouring Excellence

The university noted that honorary doctorates form part of a long-standing international tradition among leading higher education institutions, allowing them to recognise individuals whose achievements and influence extend beyond their professional fields. The UBA’s Consultative Council, responsible for defining the conferment of honorary doctorates, described Messi’s contribution to sport, culture and national identity as one that “transcends the football sphere and makes him one of the most outstanding and significant figures and trajectories in our national history, a fact that constitutes an exceptional merit.”

The ceremony on October 6 will mark the final chapter in Messi’s international career, closing a two-decade journey that began with his debut for Argentina in 2005 and culminated in the World Cup triumph in Qatar in 2022. As the UBA’s resolution put it, the doctorate is not merely an acknowledgement of trophies and records, but a recognition of a figure who has carried the hopes and identity of a nation on the world stage.
