Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping highlighted the enduring friendship between the United States and China on Thursday evening, exchanging warm toasts at a formal White House state dinner attended by senior American officials and leading business executives.
The dinner in the East Room closed a tightly scheduled day of talks that marked Xi’s first visit to Washington in more than a decade and the leaders’ second face-to-face meeting of 2026. It followed Trump’s state visit to Beijing in May, completing a rare reciprocal exchange of visits within six months.
In his remarks, Trump acknowledged the two countries’ different political systems while stressing people-to-people bonds. “As the leaders of our two nations, President Xi and I both understand that we represent different systems, but the ties between our people endure, and we’ve never gotten along better,” he said. He called for a relationship that “promotes prosperity and security for future generations” and presented Xi with a bald-eagle statue, calling it a symbol of America’s free spirit that he hoped would find a place of honor in Beijing.
Xi struck a similarly conciliatory note, describing the moment as a “new historical juncture.” He said the leaders had reached common understanding on many issues during the visit, giving “new substance” and “new strategic guidance” to bilateral ties. “Like a river that never stops flowing, history never stands still,” Xi said. “Let us join hands and move forward side by side. Together, let us nurture the beautiful flowers of Sino-U.S. friendship and write a new chapter in our friendly relations.” He added that Trump’s goal of making America great again and China’s pursuit of national rejuvenation could be mutually reinforcing.
Approximately 134 guests filled the room. Seated near the two presidential couples were Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, Apple executive chair Tim Cook, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and AMD CEO Lisa Su. Other prominent attendees included Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, and executives from BlackRock, Boeing, Lockheed Martin and other major firms. U.S. officials present included Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Chinese participants included Politburo Standing Committee member Cai Qi, Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Vice Premier He Lifeng.
The menu featured American ingredients with subtle Chinese influences: yellow squash velouté with wild mushroom fricassee, sesame-crusted sea bass with braised baby bok choy, and a dessert of vanilla crémeux with White House honey ice cream. The wine selection nodded to the 1972 Nixon-Zhou Enlai “Toast to Peace.” American artists performed during the evening, which unfolded in a cordial atmosphere.
Earlier in the day the leaders held a lengthy private meeting that touched on Taiwan, trade, artificial intelligence, the Middle East and the war in Ukraine. Trump described the talks as a “great meeting.” Both sides have signaled interest in stabilizing relations even as core differences remain unresolved.
The reciprocal visits and public displays of goodwill represent a notable effort to manage competition through personal diplomacy. Whether the warm rhetoric produces concrete progress will be tested in the months ahead.
