Baba Jamal takes leave to contest NDC Ayawaso East primary

Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, has confirmed that he is on a 10-day leave of absence to focus on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary in Ayawaso East.

He has, however, dismissed calls for him to resign from his diplomatic position, insisting that his political ambition does not conflict with his current role.

Mr Baba Jamal is one of six aspirants who have picked nomination forms to contest the NDC primary ahead of the March 3 by-election, triggered by the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure. The primary is scheduled to take place on February 7.

Speaking in an interview on Citi FM on Sunday, January 25, the High Commissioner explained that he would only relinquish his post if he successfully wins the parliamentary seat.

He also appealed to party delegates to consider his experience and leadership track record, expressing confidence that he can deliver development and effective representation for the Ayawaso East constituency.

Meanwhile, the NDC has confirmed that six aspirants have officially picked nomination forms for the contest. They include the Ayawaso East Constituency Chairman, Mohammed Ramme; Hajia Amina Adam, widow of the late MP; Dr Yakubu Azindow; Najib Mohammed Sani; Salam Daru; and Mr Baba Jamal.

Providing an update on the process, the party’s Deputy Director of Elections and IT, Rashid Tanko Computer, described the contest as highly competitive, noting that nominations will be filed on January 27. He added that the strong interest underscores the importance of the by-election and the keen nature of the primary race.
