22 Togolese nationals arrested for suspected illegal mining in Savannah Region

Police in the Savannah Region have arrested 22 Togolese nationals suspected of planning to engage in illegal mining activities, locally known as galamsey, in the West Gonja Municipality.

The arrests were made on Thursday, January 23, when officers from the Savannah Regional Police Intelligence Department intercepted a Kia truck with registration number BA 223-12 along a route in the region. The vehicle was being driven by Abdul Majeed Yakubu.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the 22 occupants were Togolese nationals travelling to Tuntumba, a community known as a hotspot for illegal mining operations, with the intention of participating in galamsey activities.

The suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations. Authorities have indicated that they will be handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for further immigration processing and appropriate legal action.

The operation forms part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to curb illegal mining and cross-border criminal activities in Ghana’s mining regions.
