The Pharaohs will take the field against Belgium without their iconic seven-star emblem, as FIFA enforces strict kit regulations just days before the tournament opener.
Egypt have been dealt a major kit blow on the eve of their 2026 World Cup campaign, with FIFA ordering the removal of the seven stars that traditionally adorn the national teamโs jersey. The starsโwhich symbolise Egyptโs record seven Africa Cup of Nations titlesโhave been deemed in violation of tournament regulations, leaving the Pharaohs to face Belgium on Monday without one of the most recognisable elements of their footballing identity.
But the changes do not stop there. FIFA has also demanded that Egypt alter the colour of player names and squad numbers from gold to white, citing visibility concerns for television broadcasts and match officials.
Stars Only for World Champions
Under FIFAโs kit regulations for the World Cup finals, national teams are permitted to display stars only for victories in the tournament itself. Continental titlesโwhether from AFCON, the European Championship, or the Copa Americaโare not recognised on jerseys during the competition.
Egyptโs seven AFCON crowns, won in 1957, 1959, 1986, 1998, 2006, 2008 and 2010, make them the most successful nation in the competitionโs history. However, that illustrious continental record counts for nothing under FIFAโs World Cup dress code.
The only exception to the rule is Uruguay, who are permitted to wear four starsโtwo for their World Cup victories in 1930 and 1950, and two for Olympic gold medals won in 1924 and 1928, when the football tournament was organised by FIFA.
Not a Last-Minute Surprise
Despite the drama surrounding the late intervention, the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has moved to play down suggestions of a last-minute crisis. Media officer Mohamed Morad Thabet confirmed that FIFA had notified the association four months ago.
โIt was a routine procedure: four months ago, FIFA notified the Football Association regarding the issue of not displaying the Africa Cup of Nations stars on the national teamโs jersey during World Cup matches,โ Morad told ESPN. โ[This was a] notification; it was merely a routine step. The national team had already anticipated this and made the necessary preparations well in advanceโ.
The EFA similarly insisted that the numbering change was โa standard organisational and technical requirementโ rather than an unexpected hurdle.
Kit manufacturer Puma has already implemented the required modifications, switching the squad numbers from gold to white to ensure better legibility.
A History of World Cup Heartbreak
Egypt are making their fourth World Cup appearance, having previously featured in 1934, 1990 and 2018. They became the first Arab and African team to play in the tournament in 1934, but their World Cup record remains a source of frustration: the Pharaohs are still searching for their first-ever victory at the finals.
Their Group G campaign begins against Belgium in Seattle on Monday, followed by fixtures against New Zealand and Iran. With Mohamed Salah captaining the side in what will be his second World Cup appearance, Egypt will be hoping to finally break their winless duck and reach the knockout stages for the first time.
A Growing Trend
Egypt are not the only nation to fall foul of FIFAโs strict kit regulations. Haiti were also forced into an eleventh-hour redesign after FIFA deemed certain graphic elements on their jerseyโcelebrating the countryโs independenceโtoo political. Reports have also emerged that Senegal have been banned from wearing their AFCON star at the tournament.
For Egypt, however, the loss of the seven stars is particularly poignant. They represent not just titles, but a legacy of continental dominance that has defined Egyptian football for generations. On Monday, when the Pharaohs walk out at Seattle Stadium, that legacy will be visible everywhere except on their chests.
