The World University Service of Canada (WUSC), in partnership with the West African Union Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, has officially graduated the first cohort of its Activate Short Courses program at Valley View University (VVU) Techiman Campus.
The ceremony, held on March 25, 2026, marked the successful completion of practical skills training for participants from Techiman and surrounding communities. The program is designed to equip young people with employable and entrepreneurial skills, offering hands-on training in poultry, mushroom production, vegetable farming, and web design.
Dr. Amponsah Kodom Micheal, Rector of VVU Techiman, described the initiative as a transformative effort to empower youth toward self-reliance. He noted that the program, sponsored by Mastercard International, is inclusive and open to individuals aged 35 and under, with a strong emphasis on female participation.
“The program runs for three to four months. For the first cohort, we offered training in poultry, mushroom production, vegetable farming, and web design,” Dr. Kodom said. He added that the initiative is fully funded, with participants receiving all necessary tools and meals throughout the training period. Graduates also receive start-up packages to help them establish their own businesses.
Special guest Dr. Awal Mohammed, Deputy Director-General in charge of Operations at the Ghana Standards Authority, represented the Techiman South Municipal Chief Executive at the event. He praised the program’s objectives and encouraged local youth to enroll in future cohorts.
“I am highly impressed with what I have witnessed here today. The motive behind this program is truly commendable,” Dr. Mohammed said, emphasizing the initiative’s role in providing practical skills that can significantly improve livelihoods.
Graduates expressed gratitude to the organizers, noting that the training had equipped them with the knowledge and confidence to start and manage their own ventures. The ceremony also featured an exhibition of products created by participants, showcasing the practical skills acquired during the program.
The Activate Short Courses program is expected to admit additional cohorts as it continues to expand skills development opportunities for youth in the Bono East Region.
