Wilder outpoints Chisora in final fight for veteran Briton

Deontay Wilder claimed a split-decision victory over Derek Chisora on Saturday night at The O2 Arena, in what is expected to be the final professional bout of the 42-year-old British heavyweight’s career.

Both men absorbed heavy punishment over the full distance, with Chisora dropped in the eighth round and sent through the ropes. He appeared close to being stopped on several occasions as Wilder pressed for a finish, but survived to hear the final bell.

Wilder, 40, was awarded scores of 115–111 and 115–113 in his favour, while a third judge scored the contest 115–112 to Chisora.

After the fight, Wilder revealed he had deliberately held back from delivering a knockout blow, citing concerns for his opponent’s long-term health.

“I had an adorable opponent. I knew Derek was going to bring everything he had,” Wilder said. “In the ring I saw his temple start to swell. I said, ‘You’ve got to live for your kids.’ Too many lives have been lost in this ring. Nobody gives a damn about us. Us fighters have to look out for each other.

“Tonight, I looked out for him. I want him to live for his kids. It’s time for us to take care of each other. I have seven of my own — those are my best friends.”

The American added: “I knew Derek was going to attack. I knew he was going to give everything for his retirement fight. I told him this as I saw his eyes and temples swell: ‘Brother, you have to live for your children. I don’t want to hurt you. I love you too much.’ I watched over Derek tonight.”

Chisora, a fan favourite known for his brawling style and durability, has not yet formally confirmed his retirement but has repeatedly signalled that this bout would be his last.
