We’re not breaking away: Ken Agyapong’s camp dismisses new party rumors

The spokesperson for Kennedy Agyapong has firmly denied swirling rumors that the outspoken politician is planning to break away from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to form his own political movement.

Speculation intensified over the weekend following Mr. Agyapong’s absence from a thanksgiving service held by the NPP’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. Social media users and political commentators quickly linked his non-attendance to alleged discontent within the party ranks.

However, Kwasi Kwarteng, a key member of the Agyapong campaign team, has dismissed the claims as baseless and made in “bad faith.”

Speaking to the press, Mr. Kwarteng clarified that the former Assin Central MP was simply out of town and unable to attend the event. He questioned why Mr. Agyapong was being singled out, pointing to the absence of other high-profile party figures.

“It is not the case that because Ken did not go to the thanksgiving, it means he is not supporting the party, or that he is forming his own party. That doesn’t come in,” Mr. Kwarteng stated.

“Does the absence of former President Kufuor mean he is forming his own party? Nana Akufo-Addo was not there either. Does that mean he is also going to form his own party? Even Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo was not present,” he argued. He further noted that Lawyer Atta Kyea, a key figure in Dr. Bawumia’s own campaign, was also absent, questioning if that implied disloyalty.

Mr. Kwarteng emphatically reiterated that Kennedy Agyapong remains fully committed to the NPP. His comments come at a time when the party is actively reorganizing and strategizing ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Despite a fiercely contested internal primaries last year, all former presidential aspirants have publicly pledged their support to unite the party and reclaim political power in the next election cycle.
