The United States Embassy in Accra has announced the release of tens of thousands of new visa appointment slots, a move set to benefit Ghanaians planning to travel for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, the Embassy coupled the announcement with a firm warning for all prospective travelers to strictly adhere to U.S. immigration laws.
Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, February 20, Chargé d’Affaires Rolf Olson confirmed that the expanded appointments are available to all visitor visa applicants, including soccer fans hoping to attend the World Cup. He urged the public to apply immediately to secure their slots.
“Today, I’m happy to say that thanks to a surge in consular personnel, we have visitor visa appointments available next week, the week after, and the week after that,” Mr. Olson stated. “Everyone benefits from this increased availability. Whether you’ve been planning to book an appointment or want to reschedule an existing one to an earlier date, do it now.”
While facilitating travel for the global sporting event, Mr. Olson used the platform to clarify a critical point of U.S. immigration protocol: a visa does not guarantee entry or dictate the length of stay.
“It’s really incumbent upon every visitor to respect the laws of the country they’re in, both in terms of conduct and how long they stay,” Mr. Olson emphasized. He explained that the visa itself is merely permission to travel to a U.S. port of entry. The final decision to grant admission, as well as the determination of the authorized length of stay, rests solely with U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers upon arrival.
Mr. Olson stressed that overstaying the period authorized by a border protection officer is a serious violation that will not be tolerated and can jeopardize future travel opportunities.
The Embassy clarified that there will be no special visa procedures or dedicated expedited processing specifically for World Cup attendees, asserting that the current surge in appointment capacity is sufficient to meet the demand. Officials encouraged everyone to act promptly, as appointment slots are limited.
The Embassy reaffirmed its commitment to working with the Government of Ghana to ensure lawful and smooth travel for the tournament, while underscoring that respecting the conditions of a visa is paramount for maintaining future travel privileges.
