US deploys 100 troops to Nigeria as militant attacks intensify

The United States has deployed 100 military personnel to Nigeria to assist in the fight against escalating violence by armed groups and extremist militants across the country, Nigerian defence officials confirmed on Tuesday.

The troops arrived at Bauchi Airfield in northeastern Nigeria, a region heavily affected by recent insurgent activity. According to Major General Samaila Uba, spokesperson for the Nigerian Defence Headquarters, the American forces will not participate in combat operations but will focus on training, technical support, and intelligence assistance.

“The deployment is part of a formal request by the Nigerian government to the United States for specialised support,” Uba said. He emphasised that all operations will remain under the command of the Nigerian Armed Forces, ensuring national sovereignty while benefiting from international expertise.

Rising Violence Prompts International Response

The arrival of US personnel comes amid a surge in attacks by organisations including Boko Haram, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), and other criminal networks operating across northern and central Nigeria.

Recent months have witnessed coordinated raids resulting in significant civilian casualties. In one tragic incident, militants killed at least 46 villagers and abducted several others during simultaneous attacks on rural communities. Residents in affected regions have repeatedly called for enhanced security measures as assaults become increasingly frequent.

The collaboration extends beyond personnel deployment, with Nigerian authorities also requesting additional equipment and logistical support to counter sophisticated insurgent operations.

Regional Context

Analysts note that the expanded US-Nigeria military partnership reflects broader regional concerns, as violent groups across the Sahel and West Africa have intensified operations ranging from kidnappings to illegal mining protection rackets.

The deployment follows previous international criticism regarding Nigeria’s capacity to protect civilians from militant attacks. Nigerian officials have defended their response, citing challenges posed by the widespread mobility and reach of armed groups.

Strategic Partnership

Officials describe the initiative as a long-term effort to enhance local military capabilities through joint exercises, intelligence sharing, and operational training. The goal is to improve Nigerian forces’ effectiveness in preventing attacks, protecting vulnerable communities, and stabilising conflict-affected areas.

“This represents a significant step in international cooperation and capacity-building,” a defence statement read, noting that both Washington and Abuja view the partnership as essential for addressing root causes of insecurity while building a more resilient military.

The US personnel maintain a strictly advisory role, focusing on technical expertise and strategic guidance to help Nigerian forces better respond to evolving security threats across the most affected regions.
