Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has issued a firm directive to his administration, stating that the United Kingdom must not become involved in the escalating conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.
Appearing before the Parliamentary Liaison Committee on Monday, Starmer emphasized that the government requires a clear legal basis to ensure the UK remains uninvolved, framing the ongoing hostilities as not being “our war.”
The Prime Minister cautioned against optimism regarding a swift resolution to the tensions, urging his team to prepare for a prolonged period of instability in the region.
“You must not fall into the false comfort that the Iran conflict will end soon,” Sir Keir told the committee.
His remarks come shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that strong talks were underway with Tehran to halt the ongoing hostilities. While acknowledging the diplomatic efforts, Starmer struck a cautious tone, stating that the discussions were “welcoming” but that the UK must remain vigilant.
In addition to the geopolitical risks, the Prime Minister stressed the necessity of implementing safeguards to protect the British economy from potential fallout stemming from the conflict.
