South African singer Tyla has clinched her second Grammy Award, emerging victorious in the Best African Music Performance category ahead of four other nominees, including three Nigerian artists.
The 24-year-old won the award with her song Push 2 Start, which outshone entries by Ayra Starr, Burna Boy and Davido, as well as Ugandan singer Eddy Kenzo. Tyla previously won the same category in 2024 with her global hit Water, also surpassing several Nigerian contenders.
Reacting to her latest win at the awards ceremony in Los Angeles, Tyla expressed excitement and pride, describing the moment as surreal and celebrating her African identity. She said she was proud to represent the continent and looked forward to seeing more African artists gain global recognition.
Following the announcement, congratulatory messages poured in on social media, particularly in South Africa, where “Congratulations Tyla” trended widely. While some fans admitted they had hoped Ayra Starr would win, many acknowledged Tyla’s hard work and success.
The nominees in the Best African Music Performance category included Love by Burna Boy, With You by Davido featuring Omah Lay, Hope & Love by Eddy Kenzo and Mehran Matin, Gimme Dat by Ayra Starr featuring Wizkid, and Push 2 Start by Tyla.
Despite the global popularity of Afrobeats, the outcome disappointed many Nigerian music fans after none of the country’s nominees secured a win in the category. Burna Boy was also nominated for Best Global Music Album alongside Senegal’s Youssou N’Dour, while Angelique Kidjo received a nomination in the Best Global Music Performance category, but neither won.
However, Nigeria did receive recognition on the night, as legendary musician Fela Kuti was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award, 29 years after his death.
