The Agona Swedru Magistrate’s Court has ordered that two students from Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS) be remanded into prison custody for their alleged involvement in the violent assault of a peer from a rival school.
The court, presided over by Mr. Victor Kusi, remanded Benedict Appiah and Bilal Mamid, both 18 years old, for two weeks. Their pleas were not taken, and they are scheduled to be re-arraigned on Wednesday, March 11, 2026. The two face charges of conspiracy to commit assault and the commission of assault.
A third student, Joseph Aidoo, who was initially arraigned alongside them, was discharged by the court after he apologized and pleaded for leniency.
The incident occurred on Thursday, February 19, 2026, during inter-schools athletic games hosted at the SWESBUS premises. The victim is a student of Awutu Obrachire Senior High School.
Presenting the facts, Police Inspector Cosmos Afadzie informed the court that the two accused students violently assaulted the Obrachire SHS student during the sporting event. The severity of the attack was thrust into the national spotlight after a video of the assault went viral on social media.
The disturbing footage drew the immediate attention of the Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Commissioner of Police (COP) Mrs. Lydia Yaako Donkor, in Accra. COP Donkor subsequently visited SWESBUS to engage with the school’s management over the incident.
According to the prosecutor, during her visit, the CID boss issued a firm directive to the Headmaster of SWESBUS, Mr. Kojo Frempong: voluntarily produce the students involved in the violent clash to the police, or face the prospect of the police using other means to effect their arrests.
Following that directive, the three students were officially handed over to the Agona Swedru Divisional Police Command on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, to facilitate further investigations and prosecution.
Investigations into the incident are currently ongoing. The case has sparked a wider conversation about school violence and security at extra-curricular events, following a recent spate of similar incidents.
