Two months after deadly attack, Binajub Clan demands justice and arrests

Residents of Abunyanya in the Oti Region are growing increasingly anxious as calls for justice intensify, two months after a violent clash left two people dead and properties destroyed.

The Binajub clan has issued a passionate appeal to security agencies to expedite investigations into the deadly incident that occurred on February 1, 2026, expressing deep frustration that no arrests have been made.

At a press conference on Tuesday, March 24, clan spokesperson Foster Kwasi Danna disclosed that the victims, Uninkpel Balatob Kabuja, 60, and Tananje Tayon, 50, were killed in their homes during a dawn attack allegedly carried out by members of the Kpatatiib clan and their associates.

According to a statement from the clan, the attack occurred around 3:30 a.m., escalating from tensions over a disputed borehole project the previous day.

Security Withdrawal Preceded Assault

The statement detailed how a disagreement on January 31 intensified into a confrontation, prompting police and military personnel to intervene to restore calm. However, the clan alleged that shortly after the security forces withdrew, the attackers regrouped.

“They stormed our homes, killed two people, burnt six houses and two motorbikes, and destroyed several retail shops,” the statement read.

The clan further claimed that despite repeated calls for reinforcement, the security response was delayed, providing an opportunity for the coordinated assault to take place.

‘Heinous Killings’ and Slow Pace of Justice

Nearly two months after the incident, the Binajub clan expressed concern over what it described as the sluggish pace of investigations, noting that petitions submitted to the Oti Regional Police Command had yet to yield arrests.

Describing the killings as heinous, the clan has called on the Minister for the Interior and the Inspector-General of Police to intervene personally to ensure the swift arrest and prosecution of those responsible.

Residents say the attack has left the community on edge, with heightened tensions raising fears of potential reprisals if authorities do not act promptly.

In addition to demanding justice, the clan has appealed for an increased and sustained security presence in the area to safeguard lives and property.
