Third SWESBU student arrested over brutal assault at district school games

The Ghana Police Service has arrested a third student of Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS) in connection with the vicious mob assault on a student from Obrachire Senior High Technical School during the District Schools Athletics Games last week.

Joseph Amoh, 20, was taken into custody on Monday, February 23, 2026, bringing the total number of suspects apprehended to three, according to a statement from the Central Regional Command’s Public Affairs Unit.

The two other suspects earlier detained are Benedict Appiah, 18, and Bilal Mamud, 18 โ€” all students of Swedru School of Business.

Handover Following Police Ultimatum

The suspects were handed over to the Swedru Divisional Police Command by school authorities at approximately 9:00 pm on Monday โ€” the same day the Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department, Commissioner of Police Lydia Yaako Donkor, issued a firm 24-hour ultimatum to school management to produce all students linked to the attack.

The incident, which occurred on February 19, 2026, has sparked widespread outrage and prompted the Ghana Education Service to suspend all zonal SHS sports activities in the Central Region.

Victim’s Condition

COP Donkor has confirmed that the victim, whose identity has been withheld for protection, is receiving medical treatment and responding positively to care.

“The main victim is receiving treatment and responding to care,” COP Donkor stated, assuring the public that investigators are leaving no stone unturned in their pursuit of justice.

Police Warning

In its statement signed by Chief Inspector Isaac Evans Ettie, the Central Regional Command condemned the violent conduct of the students involved and issued a stern warning to the public, particularly students, to refrain from acts of lawlessness.

“All persons found culpable will face the full rigorous enforcement of the law,” the statement read.

The three suspects are expected to be put before court as investigations continue, with police confirming that more arrests are possible.
