The salary kings of the touchline: Someone tops Europe’s manager rich list

As the 2025-2026 season reaches its dramatic conclusion, the French sports daily L’Équipe has lifted the lid on the financial heavyweights of European football—this time, focusing on the men in the dugout.

The data reveals a significant gap in the market for elite coaching talent, with Diego Simeone of Atlético Madrid sitting alone on top of the financial podium, earning a staggering €2.17 million per month .

The Argentine manager’s ability to keep Atlético competitive against their wealthier rivals (and the occasional trip to a Champions League final) continues to pay dividends. He is the only manager in Europe currently breaking the €2 million monthly barrier.

The Guardiola Bracket

Directly behind Simeone is a man who needs no introduction: Pep Guardiola. The Manchester City architect, who has redefined the English game, secures €1.92 million per month. Despite City’s occasional struggles to replicate their Treble-winning form, Guardiola remains the benchmark for tactical innovation and sustained success, making him the highest-paid coach in the Premier League .

The podium is rounded out by the fiery Italian Antonio Conte. Now at Napoli, Conte earns €1.3 million per month, making him the highest-paid manager in Serie A. His track record of instantly transforming clubs (Juventus, Chelsea, Inter) justifies the investment for the Partenopei .

Arsenal’s Rising Star & The Bundesliga Duo

Just a hair’s breadth behind Conte is Mikel Arteta. The Arsenal boss, who has turned the Gunners into perennial title challengers, earns €1.25 million per month . Arteta’s rise mirrors Arsenal’s; once viewed as a risky rookie, he is now statistically one of the elite earners in world football.

At €1 million per month, two managers share the fifth spot:

· Luis Enrique (PSG): The Spaniard dominates Ligue 1 financially, earning triple the salary of his nearest competitor, Paulo Fonseca (€350k) .
· Vincent Kompany (Bayern Munich): The former defender rounds out the top five. Kompany’s €1 million monthly wage places him in a league of his own within the Bundesliga, where the next best-paid coaches (Niko Kovac and Kasper Hjulmand) earn just €330,000 .

The Rest of the Top 10

The list continues with a mix of La Liga and Serie A stalwarts:

· Hansi Flick (Barcelona): €910,000/month. Considered a “bargain” by some analysts given his trophy haul this season .
· Massimiliano Allegri (AC Milan): €800,000/month.
· Gian Piero Gasperini (Roma): €800,000/month.
· Unai Emery (Aston Villa): €770,000/month .

Honorable Mention: The Youth Movement
While not cracking the top ten, L’Équipe noted the interesting case of Álvaro Arbeloa. The former Real Madrid right-back, now carving out a successful coaching career with Real Madrid’s youth setup, earns a reported €500,000 per month. While a fraction of Simeone’s wage, it highlights the growing investment in coaching at all levels of the professional pyramid.

Methodology

Salaries reported are gross monthly earnings before tax, as published by L’Équipe for the 2025-2026 season.
