Tema Motorway expansion resumes after government clears all outstanding debts

The government has officially restarted the long-stalled Tema Motorway expansion project following the full settlement of all outstanding debts, Minister of Roads and Highways Kwame Governs Agbodza has confirmed.

Speaking on Tuesday, March 31, Agbodza announced that the clearance of financial obligations has paved the way for contractors to return to site, bringing the vital infrastructure project back on course after months of uncertainty.

The expansion of the busy motorway, a key artery linking the Port of Tema to Accra and other parts of the country, has been a priority for the government to ease chronic congestion and improve freight movement.

Agbodza did not disclose the total value of the debts cleared but assured that all contractual arrears have now been settled, allowing work to proceed without further interruptions.

The minister further pledged to maintain regular oversight to ensure the project stays on schedule and meets its revised completion targets.

Motorists and commuters have long called for the decongestion of the motorway, which has become notorious for rush-hour gridlock. The resumption of the expansion has therefore been met with cautious optimism by transport unions and business groups who rely on the route.

The Roads and Highways Ministry is expected to provide an updated timeline for the project’s completion in the coming days.
