Techiman Traditional Council enforces mini curfew for Appor festival rites

The Techiman Traditional Council has issued a directive to residents and travelers, announcing a mini curfew within the municipality to facilitate the performance of sacred customary rites for the annual Appor Festival.

The restriction on movement is scheduled to take effect on Wednesday, 18th March 2026, from 10:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. According to the Council, this measure is necessary to allow traditional leaders to conduct private and significant rituals at Atweredaa, a revered sacred grove within the traditional area.

In a media address, the Acting President of the Council and Akwamuhene of the Techiman Traditional Area, Nana Owusu Gyare II, emphasized the importance of compliance, warning that breaches of the curfew would attract sanctions from traditional authorities.

“The Appor festival is a historic event rich in customs, rituals, and traditions,” Nana Owusu Gyare II stated. “Tomorrow, sacred rituals will be performed. A curfew will be imposed around 10:00 p.m. to allow the traditional authorities to carry out these activities in privacy and ensure the success of this year’s celebration. There will be serious consequences for anyone who deliberately flouts this directive.”

Recognizing Techiman’s status as a major transit hub, the Council also issued specific instructions for motorists. Drivers are urged to exercise heightened respect during the curfew hours by slowing down and dimming their headlights when approaching any ceremonial activities along the roads or entering the town.

“We understand that Techiman is a major junction with many vehicles passing through,” Nana Owusu Gyare II added. “Drivers are urged to respect the directive by slowing down and dimming their lights when entering Techiman during the curfew hours.”

Beyond the curfew, the Traditional Council extended an invitation to the general public to actively participate in the broader celebrations, particularly the grand finale events scheduled for “Appor Fiada” (Appor Friday). Market women, traders, and all residents are encouraged to come out in large numbers to support and celebrate the climax of the festival.

The Appor Festival remains a cornerstone of the Techiman cultural calendar, serving as a period for spiritual renewal, historical reflection, and community bonding.
