Techiman Royal Family distances traditional council from social media attacks on Asantehene

The Techiman Krontre Royal Family has condemned the increasing use of social media to direct offensive comments at traditional leaders, particularly the Asantehene, insisting that no chief in Techiman has authorised such behaviour.

Nana Kwadwo Yeboah, spokesperson for the royal family, told reporters that individuals recording themselves making disparaging remarks about the Asantehene are acting entirely on their own accord. He stressed that their actions do not reflect the position of the Techiman Traditional Council and should not be linked to the Paramount Chief of Techiman, Oseadeyor Akumfi Ameyaw IV.

“The trend on social media is very worrying,” Nana Kwadwo Yeboah said. “What we are seeing, where some individuals are directing insults at the Asantehene, has nothing to do with the Paramount Chief or the Techiman Traditional Council. Those individuals are acting on their own.”

He disclosed that Oseadeyor Akumfi Ameyaw IV holds the chieftaincy institution in high esteem and would never engage in any act that brings it into disrepute. The spokesperson warned that while everyone is entitled to respect their own traditional leaders, disrespecting the leaders of others could provoke retaliation and undermine peace between traditional areas.

“Some of the language used on social media is unprintable and is not condoned by the Techiman Traditional Council,” he added. “Respecting the leaders of others is essential; disrespect creates room for retaliation, which will not be tolerated in Techiman.”

Nana Kwadwo Yeboah urged residents, especially the youth, to be mindful of their online conduct, noting that the reputation of Oseadeyor Akumfi Ameyaw IV and his council must not be tarnished by irresponsible behaviour.

“Oseadeyor Akumfi Ameyaw IV and his council are well-learned,” he stated. “The youth should be careful not to tarnish their image by engaging in offensive comments toward the Asantehene or any other chief in the country.
