Tanker explosion at Potsin Junction causes major traffic chaos on Kasoa-Cape Coast highway

Tanker Explosion at Potsin Junction Causes Major Traffic Chaos on Kasoa-Cape Coast HighA petrol tanker exploded at Potsin Junction in the Gomoa East District on Tuesday morning, March 17, 2026, resulting in a massive traffic gridlock along the busy Kasoa–Cape Coast highway.

The incident occurred when the tanker, reportedly traveling from Accra towards the Central Region, lost control and overturned. Preliminary reports indicate the vehicle struck a section of the road that is currently under construction, triggering the explosion.

The highway is presently undergoing rehabilitation works, with several stretches, including the area around the junction, still under active construction.

Emergency response teams from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), specifically personnel stationed at the Apam Fire Station, have been swiftly deployed to the scene. Firefighters are currently working to contain the blaze and prevent the situation from escalating.

As a result of the explosion and the ongoing emergency response operation, the highway has been brought to a standstill. Motorists have been stranded for hours, with traffic building up significantly on both sides of the route. Commuters are advised to seek alternative routes or delay travel plans until further notice.

At the time of filing this report, there were no immediate reports of casualties. An investigation into the incident is expected to commence once the scene has been secured.
