The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has assured the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, of its unwavering support in his quest to transform the country’s sporting landscape.
A high-powered delegation from the association, led by its President Kwabena Yeboah, paid a courtesy call on the Minister in Accra to explore avenues for collaboration and to reaffirm the media’s critical role in national sports development.
The meeting provided a platform for both parties to deliberate on the state of Ghanaian sports and chart a path forward.
Mr. Yeboah, a veteran journalist, commended the Minister for his accessibility and willingness to engage stakeholders. He specifically lauded Hon. Adams for his instrumental role in ensuring Ghana’s strong presence at the recent International Sports Press Federation (AIPS) congress in The Gambia, which yielded positive international exposure for the country.
“Your support enabled Ghana to make significant impact in Gambia, earning positive headlines across African and global media platforms,” Mr. Yeboah noted. “This demonstrates how sports can serve as a vital economic driver for the continent.”
The conversation zeroed in on the newly established sports fund championed by the Minister. Mr. Yeboah called for intensified publicity to ensure the fund’s sustainability and growth, emphasizing that grassroots development remains the bedrock of sporting excellence.
“We cannot continue to neglect other sporting disciplines,” he cautioned. “The absence of basic facilities across the country has hindered our progress for far too long. We must broaden our focus beyond football.”
SWAG, established in 1968, commands a membership base exceeding 1,000 sports journalists, content creators, and media practitioners nationwide. The association maintains strong affiliation with AIPS Africa and the global AIPS body, positioning it as a key player in promoting Ghanaian sports internationally.
Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams acknowledged SWAG’s indispensable role as a watchdog and promoter of sports, describing the association as a powerful voice within the ecosystem. He welcomed constructive criticism and productive journalism as essential ingredients for sectoral growth.
The Minister pledged to partner with SWAG in developing training modules to build the capacity of sports journalists, recognizing that a well-informed media is crucial for industry advancement.
“We must rally all stakeholders for a comprehensive approach to sports development,” the Minister urged. He pointed to emerging opportunities within the media space and called for aggressive publicity to attract investment and nurture homegrown talent.
Reaffirming his commitment to infrastructure development, Hon. Adams stressed the need for collective action in positioning sports as a catalyst for national development.
The engagement signals a renewed partnership between Ghana’s sports media and the Ministry, setting the stage for collaborative efforts aimed at elevating the country’s sporting fortunes on the global stage.
