Security agencies arrest 141 suspected cybercrime operatives in coordinated raids

Security agencies have arrested 141 suspected cybercrime operatives following a coordinated early-morning operation in Tabora and Lashibi aimed at dismantling organised fraud networks involved in mobile money scams and business email compromise.

The intelligence-led exercise was conducted by the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, National Security, and the Ghana Immigration Service. A total of 100 suspects were arrested in Tabora, while 41 were picked up in Lashibi.

Preliminary investigations suggest the suspects are Nigerian nationals. Security personnel retrieved 38 laptops and 150 mobile phones believed to have been used in cyber-enabled financial crimes.

Authorities also arrested a Ghanaian landlord accused of housing about 100 of the suspects. Officials stressed that property owners have a duty to ensure their premises are not used to facilitate criminal activity.

The suspects are alleged to be involved in offences including mobile money fraud, romance scams, sextortion, business email compromise, and wire fraud. Forensic analysis of the seized devices is ongoing, and those found culpable will be prosecuted in accordance with Ghanaian law.

The Cyber Security Authority has urged the public to remain vigilant, report suspicious online activities, and support national efforts to combat cybercrime, while reaffirming that Ghana remains open to foreigners engaged in legitimate business.
