Roads Minister briefs Asantehene on major Accra-Kumasi Expressway project

The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has paid a courtesy call on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to provide a detailed briefing on the proposed 198.7-kilometre Accra–Kumasi Expressway Project.

The meeting, which took place on Friday, April 10, 2026, also included the Deputy Minister for Defence, Brogya Genfi, and a high-level delegation of military and regional officials.

During the closed-door discussions, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II was informed of plans to involve the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) in the initial phase of the project. The military’s engineering corps is expected to play a key role in enhancing the feasibility studies and preparatory works for the major infrastructure upgrade.

The delegation was led by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene. Other officials present included the Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong; the Director of Engineering Services at GAF, Colonel Jonas Wiafe; and the Deputy Minister for Roads, Alhassan Suhuyini.

The Accra–Kumasi Expressway project, which entails the construction of a new six-lane dual carriageway, is designed to significantly improve connectivity between Ghana’s two largest cities. Upon completion, the expressway is expected to drastically reduce travel time, enhance road safety, and stimulate economic activity along the entire corridor.

The briefing is seen as a critical step in securing traditional and institutional support for the ambitious road project.
