Putin offers condolences and praises Khamenei following assassination in Iran

Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered his profound condolences to the leadership and people of Iran following the assassination of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several members of his family, the Kremlin confirmed on Sunday.

In a formal statement addressed to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, President Putin condemned the attack as a “heinous crime” and a “cynical violation of all norms of human morality and international law.”

The Russian leader eulogized the late Supreme Leader as a pivotal figure in the strengthening of bilateral ties between Moscow and Tehran. “In our country, Grand Ayatollah Khamenei will be remembered as an outstanding statesman who made an enormous personal contribution to the development of friendly ties between Russia and Iran and to raising them to the level of a comprehensive strategic partnership,” Putin stated.

The Kremlin’s message extended beyond official protocol, conveying sympathy to the Supreme Leader’s immediate family. “Please, convey my most sincere sympathy and support to the family and friends of the Supreme Leader, as well as to the leadership and to the entire people of Iran,” the Russian President added.

The assassination of the 86-year-old Iranian leader marks a significant escalation in regional tensions. Russia, which has forged a deep “comprehensive strategic partnership” with Iran in recent years—cooperating closely on energy, military, and geopolitical issues—is now faced with the task of navigating ties with Tehran in a post-Khamenei era.

President Pezeshkian has yet to issue a formal response to the Kremlin’s message. World leaders continue to react to the shocking development as questions remain regarding the security lapse that led to the death of the long-serving Supreme Leader.
