Probe GHC52.5bn transfer to unknown accounts; private legal practitioner urges EOCO

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has called on the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to investigate the movement of a staggering GH¢52.5 billion from the Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) to unidentified accounts.

In a statement that has raised concerns about financial oversight and potential malfeasance, Mr. Kpebu urged the anti-graft body to expedite action on tracing the funds to ensure transparency and accountability.

“The movement of such a colossal amount of money to unknown accounts raises serious red flags. It is imperative that EOCO steps in to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the destination of these funds and the circumstances surrounding the transfers,” Mr. Kpebu stated.

The call for an investigation comes amidst a backdrop of heightened scrutiny of financial transactions and governance practices in the country. The GH¢52.5 billion figure, a substantial sum by any measure, has sparked debate about the security of public funds and the mechanisms in place to prevent illicit financial flows.

As of the time of this report, neither GCB nor EOCO has issued an official response to Mr. Kpebu’s allegations or the calls for a probe. However, sources indicate that the matter is likely to be taken seriously given the involvement of a major financial institution and a state investigative body.

This development adds to a growing list of financial controversies that have captured public attention in recent weeks, including allegations of scholarship fraud and other high-profile investigations involving state officials and private citizens. The Ghanaian public will be watching closely to see how EOCO responds to the pressure to act on this latest revelation.
