Prez Mahama commissions B5PLUS Steel plant, hails new era for Ghanaian industrialization

Ghana’s industrial landscape received a major boost on Friday as President John Dramani Mahama inaugurated a new state-of-the-art steel manufacturing facility for B5PLUS Company Limited at Lɛpleku in the Ningo-Prampram Municipality.

Describing the event as a significant milestone in the nation’s quest for economic self-reliance, President Mahama stated that the plant represents the tangible results of effective collaboration between the public and private sectors.

“This facility is more than just a production site; it is a powerful symbol of Ghana’s determination to break free from over-reliance on imports and build a resilient, industrialised economy,” President Mahama remarked during the commissioning ceremony. “It demonstrates what we can achieve when public policy, private investment, and innovation converge for a single national purpose.”

The President highlighted the plant’s potential to generate hundreds of direct and indirect jobs for the youth in the municipality and beyond. He noted that by bolstering domestic steel production, the nation would strengthen critical sectors like construction and manufacturing, reduce its import bill, and position itself as a competitive industrial hub within the West African sub-region.

The Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Hon. Lawyer Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, reinforced the strategic importance of the steel sector to the government’s economic transformation agenda. She noted that the B5PLUS facility aligns perfectly with national policies aimed at promoting local industries and enhancing export capacity under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

“This administration is committed to supporting private-sector-led growth,” the Minister stated. “Through consistent policy support, trade facilitation reforms, and strategic partnerships, we are creating the enabling environment for Ghanaian industries to thrive and compete globally.”

Mr. Mukesh V. Thakwani, Chief Executive Officer of B5PLUS, expressed his enthusiasm for the company’s expanded footprint in Ghana. He reaffirmed the company’s dedication to utilising modern technology and sustainable practices to produce high-quality steel locally.

“We are proud to deepen our investment in Ghana and to play a pivotal role in its industrialisation journey,” Mr. Thakwani said. “This plant is not just about steel; it is about building capacity, developing local talent, and supporting the nation’s goal of becoming self-sufficient.”

The commissioning ceremony was attended by a host of government officials, traditional leaders from the Ningo-Prampram area, and key stakeholders from the business community. The B5PLUS plant is expected to significantly enhance local production capacity and value addition, marking a confident step forward in Ghana’s long-term industrial growth strategy.
