President John Dramani Mahama has praised the Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited (GWL), Adam Mutawakilu, for his instrumental role in advancing the long-delayed Damongo Water Supply Project, describing access to safe water as a fundamental right.
Speaking on Monday at the 50th anniversary celebration of the Gonjaland Youth Association in Buipe, the President noted that the project had finally crossed a critical hurdle.
“With regards to access to safe water, we know it is a right and not a privilege. I want to thank my younger brother for the very good work he has done; we did not send him to the Ghana Water Company for nothing,” President Mahama said.
“He has done all the legwork, and I am happy to announce that just last week, the Minister for Finance signed the commitment letter for the Damongo Water Supply System to start.”
The announcement drew relief from residents of Damongo and surrounding communities, which have endured chronic water shortages for years. The signing of the commitment letter now clears the way for procurement processes and eventual construction works.
Mutawakilu, popularly known as Garlus, was appointed Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited in January 2025. Since taking office, he has overseen reforms aimed at improving operations, strengthening administration, and expanding water supply systems nationwide.
Beyond Damongo, his portfolio includes ongoing work on major infrastructure projects in Tamale and Yendi, aligning with the government’s broader agenda to expand potable water access and meet global development targets.
Officials say preliminary processes for the Damongo project—including administrative and ministerial approvals—have been fast-tracked, culminating in the recent financial commitment from the Ministry of Finance.
