President Mahama orders probe into scholarship corruption allegations

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) to launch an immediate and full-scale investigation into allegations of financial misconduct in the award of government-sponsored overseas scholarships.

The directive was announced by the Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Fosu, in a statement dated February 3, 2026. This action follows a radio discussion on Sompa 106.5 FM during which a panelist, former NEIP CEO Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, alleged that an individual made a payment to secure a scholarship for studies abroad.

In a formal communication to the Director-General of the NIB, the Presidency labeled the allegation as “serious and of grave public concern.” The statement emphasized that the President’s order aligns with the government’s “firm commitment to transparency, integrity, and equal access to educational opportunities.”

The radio discussion, conducted in Twi, has sparked significant public debate regarding the fairness and meritocracy of state-sponsored educational schemes.

According to the statement, the NIB has been instructed to “immediately investigate the allegation, establish its factual basis, identify any persons involved, and determine the veracity or otherwise of the claims made.” The Bureau is to submit its findings directly to President Mahama for his consideration and “for any appropriate action that may arise therefrom.”

The investigation is expected to scrutinize the processes and management of recent overseas scholarship awards under various government programs. The development occurs amid ongoing national discourse on equity and transparency in the distribution of public educational opportunities.
