Former South Korea and Portugal head coach Paulo Bento has emerged as a leading candidate to take over Ghana’s national team, the Black Stars, as the Ghana Football Association (GFA) accelerates its search for a new manager.
The position became vacant following the dismissal of Otto Addo, who was let go after a series of disappointing results in recent international fixtures. With approximately 70 days remaining until the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the GFA faces mounting pressure to appoint a successor and finalise preparations for the tournament.
According to multiple reports, Bento has expressed interest in the role. Sources close to the process indicate the 54-year-old Portuguese tactician is keen on a return to international management.
World Cup Pedigree
Bento is no stranger to football’s biggest stage. He guided South Korea to the Round of 16 at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, earning widespread praise for his tactical discipline and ability to organise a competitive side. His experience is seen as a major asset for a Ghanaian team seeking stability and direction ahead of the global showpiece.
This is not the first time Bento has been linked with the Black Stars. He was previously considered for the job in 2022, before Otto Addo was appointed on a permanent basis.
Other Candidates and Challenges
While the GFA has reportedly received close to 600 applications for the role, Bento stands out among a crowded field. Another high-profile name, Hervé Renard, is also believed to be in contention, though uncertainty surrounding his current situation has shifted attention toward Bento within Ghanaian football circles.
After leaving South Korea, Bento held talks with the Poland national team but failed to reach an agreement, with Fernando Santos eventually taking that job. He later took charge of the United Arab Emirates in 2023 but was dismissed in March 2025 following a dip in form and disappointing results.
Despite that setback, the Ghana opportunity offers an attractive proposition: a swift return to the global stage and the chance to lead a talented squad into the World Cup.
Decision Ahead
Ultimately, the decision now rests with Bento — whether to embrace a short-term, high-stakes challenge with Ghana or wait for a more stable, long-term project elsewhere.
The GFA is expected to continue its evaluation process before making a final decision on the next head coach of the Black Stars.
