Porter jailed 18 months for theft of GHC3,500 from trader in Tarkwa

A circuit court in Tarkwa has handed down a custodial sentence to a local porter found guilty of stealing from a trader he was assisting. The convict, Eric Essuman, widely known by the nickname “Nzema,” was sentenced to 18 months of imprisonment with hard labour by the Tarkwa District Magistrate Court Two.

Essuman was found guilty of stealing an amount of GH¢3,500 belonging to a trader. According to details presented in court, the incident occurred while the convict was performing his duties as a porter, which placed him in a position of trust with the victim.

The prosecution successfully argued that Essuman took the money without the owner’s consent, an act constituting theft under Ghanaian law. After a thorough review of the evidence presented, the presiding magistrate delivered the guilty verdict and imposed the custodial sentence.

The inclusion of hard labour in the sentence underscores the court’s intent to make the punishment stringent enough to serve as a deterrent to others. Legal observers and community members present have expressed support for the ruling, emphasizing that swift and decisive action against such breaches of trust is essential for upholding law and order.

The case highlights the judiciary’s ongoing commitment to protecting citizens’ property rights and maintaining public confidence in the legal system, particularly in petty trading and informal employment sectors where transactions are often based on trust. The sentence serves as a firm reminder that violations of that trust will be met with serious legal consequences.
