A police officer has been killed after suspected armed robbers opened fire on a police vehicle responding to an incident on the Zebilla-Widnaba road.
The attack occurred on Sunday, February 8, at approximately 8:00 PM. According to police reports, two officers were travelling from Widnaba towards Zebilla when they encountered an ongoing armed robbery. Upon sighting the officers, the assailants reportedly initiated gunfire, fatally wounding one of them.
The injured officer was swiftly transported to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital by a police response team that answered a distress call. He was, however, pronounced dead upon arrival. The identity of the deceased officer has not yet been released pending notification of family.
In an official statement, the Regional Police Command confirmed it has launched a full-scale investigation into the murder. The Command has also mounted a special operation aimed at tracking down and apprehending all individuals involved in the attack.
Despite the rising security challenges on some major roads in the area, the Command has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of residents within the Bawku Division and its environs.
The incident has heightened concerns over security on interstate roads in the region, with calls for intensified police patrols and preventive measures.
