The Ghana Police Service has launched a full-scale investigation into a disturbing incident of school violence that marred the District Schools Athletics Games in Agona Swedru, Central Region, on February 19.
What was meant to be a celebration of youthful athleticism descended into chaos following a violent confrontation between students from two prominent senior high schools. The clash, which was captured in graphic detail on video and has since gone viral on social media, has sparked widespread public outrage.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that tensions flared between students of Obrachire Senior High Technical School and the Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS), escalating rapidly from a verbal dispute to a physical brawl.
During the melee, a student from Obrachire was set upon by a group of assailants. Disturbing footage shows the victim being struck with sticks and pelted with stones as onlookers scrambled for safety. The attack only subsided after bystanders, including teachers and spectators, intervened to pull the injured student away from the mob.
The victim was rushed to a nearby health facility, where he is currently receiving medical attention. His condition has not been officially disclosed.
In a statement posted on its official Facebook page, the Police confirmed they have taken cognizance of the viral footage and are treating the matter with the utmost urgency.
“POLICE COMMENCE INVESTIGATION INTO VIRAL VIDEO OF STUDENT VIOLENCE. The Ghana Police Service has sighted a viral video in which a group of people are seen pelting stones at a student,” the statement read. “Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and further developments will be communicated in due course.”
The Police strongly condemned the violence, assuring the public that efforts are underway to identify all perpetrators involved in the attack.

The incident has triggered a wave of concern among residents, parents, and education stakeholders across the country. Many are calling for enhanced security measures and stricter supervision at inter-school sporting events to prevent such occurrences in the future.
