Police have intercepted another passenger bus transporting more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition from Accra to northern Ghana at the Asankare Police barrier in the Ashanti Region.
The vehicle, a Kia Grand Bird bus with registration number AK 1309–21, was stopped during a routine operation by officers on duty at the checkpoint. A search later uncovered 1,050 rounds of AAA and BB cartridge ammunition.
The bus was being driven by 42-year-old Mohammed Gzali, with 22-year-old Mohammed Jabir as his assistant. At the time of interception, the vehicle was carrying 45 passengers.
According to a police situational report (SITREP) sighted by Graphic Online, the bus was travelling from Accra to Tamale, with Savulegu as its final destination.
The report stated that officers became suspicious during the routine inspection and alerted the Divisional Commander, who arrived at the scene alongside the Juaso District Commander and the Juaso District Crime Officer. An extensive search of the vehicle was subsequently conducted.
During the search, officers opened a sack found in the bus and discovered the ammunition.
