The Ghana Police Service has arrested 13 suspected prostitutes, a landlord, and a bouncer in Koforidua over alleged human trafficking, assault, and operating a brothel.
The operation followed a complaint filed on Thursday, February 6, by a 30-year-old Nigerian national, Godwill, who claimed she was trafficked into Ghana for prostitution.
According to the Municipal Police Commander, Ransford Nsiah, the complainant reported that she was brought to Ghana by her alleged mistress, Christabel Simon Monday, also Nigerian, and was forced to earn a daily target of GHS400 from commercial sex work.
After failing to meet the target, earning only GHS250, Godwill alleged that she was assaulted by her mistress and the mistress’s boyfriend, Simon Kwarteng.
Investigations led police to Dabiasem, a suburb of New Juaben, where Christabel Simon Monday was arrested. During a raid on the premises, owned by landlord Omari Gyamfi, police discovered a brothel and detained twelve other Nigerian females, including a 15-year-old minor.
Unused condoms were retrieved from the scene.
The minor has been separated for protection, and social welfare agencies are involved in providing further assistance.
All suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations and will be arraigned after investigations are concluded.
The Ghana Police Service has reaffirmed its commitment to fighting human trafficking and protecting vulnerable persons, urging the public to report similar incidents.
