Police arrest suspect in killing of officer at Zebilla

The Ghana Police Service has apprehended a key suspect wanted in connection with the armed robbery and fatal shooting of a police officer in the Upper East Region earlier this month.

The suspect, identified as Simon Apusiga, also known as Ananga, aged 42, was taken into custody on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, following an intelligence-led operation by a special police team.

According to a press statement issued on Saturday, February 14, by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Apusiga was arrested from a hideout in the Tarkwa Huni Valley area of the Western Region. The operation was conducted by a team deployed by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) specifically to investigate the February 8 incident.

Preliminary investigations reveal that the suspect fled the Zebilla area immediately after the shooting. He was tracked to the Western Region through sustained intelligence-gathering efforts.

The suspect is currently in police custody assisting with investigations and is expected to be put before court soon. Authorities have confirmed that efforts are ongoing to apprehend other accomplices believed to have been involved in the deadly attack.

Background of the Incident

The fatal shooting occurred on the night of February 8, 2026, along the Zebilla–Widnaba road in the Bawku Division of the Upper East Region. The deceased officer was part of a two-man police patrol team that reportedly stumbled upon an armed robbery in progress. Police reports indicate the robbers opened fire upon sighting the officers.

The wounded officer was rushed to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital by a responding police team but was pronounced dead on arrival. The arrest of Apusiga marks a significant breakthrough in the case.
