Patience Ozokwo opens up about arranged marriage, widowhood and raising a strong family

Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwo has opened up about her early marriage, revealing that she was married off at the age of 19 through an arrangement made by her parents.

Her account, shared via the verified X account Igbo History and Fact, highlights the fears and uncertainties she faced entering a marriage she did not choose.

“Marriage found me at just 19. It wasn’t my choice; my parents arranged it. At first, I was scared. I didn’t know how to love a man I didn’t choose,” she recounted.

Ozokwo explained that despite the initial fear, love gradually developed between her and her husband, and they shared 23 years together as a couple. She disclosed that her husband battled illness for 15 years before his death in 2000.

The actress said they had three biological children and that she later adopted five more. One of the adopted children, she noted, passed away, leaving her with seven children in total.

“But as time passed, love grew. We spent 23 years together. He was sick for 15 of those years, and in 2000, he passed away,” she said.

Following her husband’s death, Ozokwo revealed that she never remarried, choosing instead to dedicate her life to raising her children.

Reflecting on modern relationships, she observed that despite increased self-awareness today, many marriages still collapse. She contrasted this with earlier generations, where arranged marriages were approached with patience, commitment and endurance.

Ozokwo added that she intentionally raised her children with strong values centred on respect and responsibility, which she believes helped her build a stable home despite life’s challenges.

“I have told my children never to think of divorce. I raised my daughters to be respectful and my sons to be responsible. That is how I built a strong home through hardship, love, respect and sacrifice,” she concluded.
