The Parliamentary Service has officially informed the Electoral Commission (EC) of a vacancy in Parliament for the Kpandai Constituency, following a High Court directive ordering a re-run of the 2024 parliamentary election in the area.
The notification, dated December 4, 2025, formally initiates the administrative process required to conduct the re-run and fill the vacant parliamentary seat.
In a letter addressed to the Chairperson of the EC, Mrs Jean Mensa, the Clerk to Parliament, Mr Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, cited Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution as the legal basis for the action. The letter explains that the vacancy arose from an order issued by the High Court in Tamale on November 24, 2025, which nullified the earlier election and directed a fresh poll.
The communication follows the Clerk’s receipt of the court order in Suit Number NR/TL/HC/E13/22/25, in which Parliament was listed as the fourth respondent.
Under Article 112(5), once a vacancy occurs in Parliament, the Clerk is required to notify the EC, which must then organise a new election within 90 days, unless the vacancy arises within three months of Parliament’s dissolution.
With the notification issued on December 4, 2025, the Electoral Commission is expected to hold the re-run by early March 2026.
Kpandai Constituency, located in the Northern Region, has been at the centre of heightened legal and political attention since the 2024 general elections. The High Court ruled that irregularities in the process were substantial enough to invalidate the results, necessitating a fresh election.
The re-run will be crucial in restoring full parliamentary representation for the people of Kpandai and could attract significant national attention, as the outcome may affect the balance of power in Parliament.
The Electoral Commission is expected to announce detailed timelines for nominations and the date of the re-run in the coming weeks
